  Common Birth Injuries
Posted By Freedman & Freedman

A birth injury is a type of injury that occurs during the labor and/or delivery process.  In some cases, birth injuries happen because medical professionals fail to monitor fetuses and mothers before labor and during labor.  Some of the more common birth injuries are:

Head/Brain Injuries:  during a typical birth, infants' heads exit birth canals first and experience a great deal of pressure.  Sometimes, doctors may use instruments, like vacuums to guide infants' heads out of the birth canal.  When these instruments are used incorrectly or with too much force, infants can suffer head and/or brain injuries.

Fractures:  another type of injury that can occur is a skull fracture.  Although very rare, skull fractures may result from medical negligence and cause lifelong suffering.

Hemorrhage:  if a blood vessel ruptures in infants' brain, hemorrhaging may occur and lead to long-term brain damage.  Additionally, hemorrhaging may result from ischemia (lack of blood flow to the brain) or hypoxia (lack of oxygen in the blood).

Did your child suffer a birth injury due to medical negligence in Detroit?  If you said "yes", now is the time to contact Freedman & Freedman and set up an evaluation with a Detroit personal injury lawyer.

  Birth Defect versus Birth Injury
Posted By Freedman & Freedman

When couples are expecting the birth of their child, the last thing they want to think about is the fact that their infant may be injured.  Unfortunately, a significant percentage of births result in newborns being injured.  Anytime infants suffer injuries during the labor and/or delivery process, the injuries are referred to as "birth injuries".

Parents who think that their children may have suffered birth injuries must first understand the difference between a "birth defect" and a "birth injury".  When a child has a birth defect, he/she did not suffer any harm during the labor and/or delivery process.  Instead, the child may have a genetic defect or may have incurred damage during the pregnancy.

Children who suffer birth injuries are usually victims of medical malpractice.  This means that during the labor and/or delivery process, medical professionals acted negligently and compromised the physical health of the children who are injured.  In these cases, parents may have the right to take legal action against medical professionals for their negligence.

Did you child suffer a birth injury in Detroit?  If so, please contact Freedman & Freedman to speak with a Detroit personal injury lawyer today.
