Pit Bull Ban Goes Nowhere
State Rep. Timothy Bledsoe of Grosse Pointe is trying to aggressively limit the number of pit bulls in the state of
Michigan
.
His bill targets American pit bull terriers, American Staffordshire bull terriers, Staffordshire bull terriers and dogs displaying one or more traits of those breeds.
It would forbid breeding of pit bulls a year after the bill passes as well as the sterilization of all remaining pit bulls within 4 years.
The bill would also ban ownership in 10 years and violators face penalties ranging from fines to jail time.
Advocates against the bill say pit bulls aren't the problem, owners are.
Hugh Crawford, chairman of the House Regulatory Reform Committee decided not to take up the proposed bill saying that the state should not "be in the dog police business."
