Sterling Heights Pit Bull Ordinance Put On Hold
Earlier we discussed the proposed Sterling Heights ordinance that would place tough restrictions on pit bull owners. The proposed ordinance would have required owners that come into the city after January to have liability insurance in the amount of $250,000, temperament training, and fencing at least 18 inches into the ground and 6 feet high. The regulations would have also applied to pit bulls that were not registered this year.
Sterling Heights had begun studying the impact of the growing pit bull population at least two years ago and determined that about one-third of the city's dog runs are pit bull-related. However, critics argue that the proposed ordinance unfairly targets one breed, that there is no such thing as a bad breed. After a city council meeting in early December that was filled with such critics, it was determined that the ordinance be put on hold until early February as city administrators research current policies and the best way to deal with irresponsible dog owners.
A dog attack can be frightening as well as extremely painful. You may be left with permanent scars and may require physical therapy and continued treatment or surgery to avoid disfigurement. The emotional trauma associated with the incident can stay with you for life.
